A joint that keeps the sole flat
The flexible joint lets the whole face of the rubber sole meet the ground even when you tilt the cane at each step. That gives a more even grip on tarmac, tiles and indoor floors than a stiff ferrule, which only touches with one edge. You pull the old tip off and press the new one on. Change it once the tread has worn smooth, so the grip stays.
