You thread the elastic cord in place of the ordinary lace and tie a single knot at the height that suits you. The stretch lets the opening widen enough for the foot to go in, and it closes around the foot again once you stand up. From then on the knot stays where it is, so putting the shoe on is one movement instead of a bend and a re-tie. Trim the ends if they are longer than you want.
