The humidifier adds moisture to the air while you sleep, which takes the edge off dryness in the nose and the mouth. You can also connect a heated tube, which holds the warmth in the air all the way to the mask. The water chamber carries a leak guard, so you can turn and shift position during the night without worrying about spills.
