General About Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a general term for different types of breathing stops during sleep, where OSA (Obstructive sleep apnea) is the most common form. OSA means that the airflow is blocked and you therefore stop breathing during sleep. An apnea is considered a breathing pause of 10 seconds or more. The body then sends a signal to the brain to wake up to start breathing again. You rarely remember this and the apneas can be repeated hundreds of times during one night. Common symptoms of sleep apnea are excessive tiredness during the day.

The Treatment

When you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, you can start treatment. Your doctor then prescribes one of the following treatments:

• CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) – provides constant air pressure all night for better sleep.
• APAP (Automatic Positive Airway Pressure) – the machine automatically adjusts the air pressure according to your breathing during the night.
• BiPAP/BPAP (Bilevel positive airway pressure) – mainly for people with medical conditions and enables inhalation and exhalation with different pressures.
